Active Conversations make a difference

Many of us know that our patients’ lives could be so much better if they would only move more.

How do we best go about helping them with this important lifestyle change in our busy clinics and time-limited consultations?

The Active Conversations course has been designed by clinicians to help you get better at exactly this…

How does it work?
Active Conversations is an online learning course, brought to you by the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK) in partnership with the Academy for Health Coaching. This highly rated course only costs £150 and is:

This is a distance learning course designed to be flexible and meet the needs of learners working in busy and demanding healthcare environments.

The course is grounded in the everyday conversations we have in clinical practice. Skills you learn from the outset are designed for practice in your day to day work.

New modules are released every two weeks and contains mixed learning materials including video demonstrations, downloadable tip sheets, guides and worksheets, weekly practice tasks, friendly discussion forums and quizzes.

Physical activity is a global priority for healthcare. We are clinicians and understand what this means for day to day clinical practice so the course is structured accordingly.

I am already spreading the word to colleagues and getting better results with my patients!

Active Conversations can help you if you find yourself struggling with any of the following:
1

Time

You know lifestyle change is important, but worry that any conversation will take too long and cause your clinic to over-run

A long conversation doesn’t mean a good conversation. We break down conversation frameworks into 1, 5 and more minute chunks to help you have a positive impact no matter how long you have with an individual

2

Defensive behaviour

You want to talk with your patients about physical activity, but worry they may get defensive

It may be what you’re saying that is promoting resistance. Learn how to build a conversation on the individual’s reasons for change

3

Excuses

You give your patients your best advice, but all they respond with is ‘yes…but…’ and excuses

We are all prone to falling into conversational traps that make conversations difficult. Learn how to anticipate and avoid these

4

Priorities

It may feel like patients don't want or expect you to talk about physical activity

Talking about physical activity can make you feel like you have to miss other important parts of a consultation. Identifying the scope of an individual’s agenda early on can help your day keep to time and allow opportunities to explore their own thoughts on physical activity in a non-threatening way that encourages them to talk

Many people lack confidence to talk to people about physical activity and may have had bad experiences where conversations have not gone as they’d hoped

Supporting behaviour change is complex and requires skills that healthcare practitioners have not traditionally been taught

Talking about physical activity can just feel like another thing in an already busy consultation

Active Conversations

- Share quality information in a non-judgmental way, with patient engagement in the conversation
- Build patient confidence that they could change, if they decided to
- Avoid meeting the ‘yes…but..’ trap, and other common traps we all fall into in conversations on behaviour change
- Learn skills which will help you in all behavioural change conversations, not just ones about physical activity
- Help more people get the benefits of a more active lifestyle from symptom reduction to disease management

Active Conversations

- Make your conversations more productive and less stressful
- Shift your own goals for the conversation to things which are under your control
- Talk to people in such a way that they generate the arguments and reasons for change and work to strengthen these
- Leverage those all important relationship factors such as empathy, alliance and feedback
- Shift the conversation from ‘what’s the matter with you?’ to ‘what matters to you?’

Skill progression

The course is delivered in a step-by-step fashion, helping you become skilful and confident at having brief conversations which guide patients towards improved health and a more active lifestyle. Practice in real life scenarios starts in week one.

How will I fit the time commitment around my work

We understand the demands of working in busy jobs whilst learning new skills. We have designed the course to be flexible with new modules released every two weeks that can be fitted in and around your work schedule.

A huge part of the learning in this course is through deliberate practise of new skills whilst undertaking your day to day work, making a significant amount of the time commitment fit into your normal working hours.

Is this different to courses I've done before?

Active Conversations are grounded in motivational interviewing theory, but the format of this course is very different to many MI courses encouraging sustained deliberate practise of new skills.  Previous learners who have done MI courses prior to active conversations have found this course an importnat way to develop and consolidate their skills:

“It has been a fantastic way of learning.  Having done two other MI weekend courses, this has given much more chance to reflect, practice, and move things forwards”

What happens if I do not complete the course?

Upon sign up you will be sent through the course schedule.  We advise you to plan time into your weekly timetable to enable you to complete each module.  You can see your progress online.  It is necessary to complete the full course, and the mandatory online feedback in order to receive your certificate.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations received within 14 days of booking your place on the course will receive a full refund.
Cancellations received after the 14-day cancellation period and earlier than 14 days before the start date of the course will receive a refund of any fees paid minus the Deposit.
Cancellations received after the 14-day cancellation period and later than 14 days before the start date of the course will not be eligible for a refund.

Whilst every effort is made to avoid changes to our programme, we reserve the right to withdraw or cancel any course. If for any reason we cancel a course, all course fees will be returned in full.

How long do I have to finish the course?

The course runs for 12 weeks.  You will receive a confirmation email that has the breakdown of modules and release dates upon registration.

Do I need to start the course on the same day and time each week?

No, the beauty of Active Conversations is that you can fit your studying in to suit you. Modules will be released on a Thursday, and we recommend that you schedule some time in that week to study and practice the techniques learnt.  It doesn’t matter if you start on a different day each week.

Are there any face to face training sessions?

We do not currently offer any face to face training sessions

What are the entry requirements?

Active Conversations is for anyone who wants to study motivational interviewing in the context of physical activity.  The course has previously attracted consultants, physiotherapists, midwives, cardiac rehabilitation specialists, dermatologists, dieticians, GPs, nursing assistants, community exercise officers, medical students, orthotists, paediatricians and administrators.

We suggest that you speak with patients/clients on a regular basis as this will enable you to put the techniques learnt into practice.

This course is delivered online; to participate you must to be familiar with using a computer.  You will also need regular access to the Internet.

Can I enrol on the course if I do not live in the UK?

Yes, you can enrol in the course if you do not live in the UK.

When is the next course starting?

The next course is starting in Autumn 2019.

I’m due to be on holiday for 2 weeks during the course, can I still enrol?

Yes!  We would advise that you plan your studying and practice sessions to ensure that you are able to keep up with the learning.  A 2 week break should not impact on your ability to complete the course.

I’m on rotation so will be changing departments during the duration of the course, will this have an impact on my learning?
