Moving Healthcare Professionals Programme

Public Health England (PHE) is seeking to commission two NHS secondary care hospital trusts to work with PHE, Sport England and the NHS Transformation Unit (Leadership Provider) to play a leading role in the collaborative co-design and analysis of a model of care emphasising physical activity promotion and integration into secondary care systems. Long term, this seeks to impact hospital trusts at a cultural and practical level, encouraging the creation of models of care which increase patient physical activity.

This tender is for Phase Two of the Active Hospitals project, one of eight workstreams in the Moving Healthcare Professionals Programme (MHPP). In MHPP Phase One, Oxford University Hospital Trust was appointed to undertake a feasibility and acceptability pilot of a Sport and Exercise Medicine-led ‘Active Hospitals’ concept that would develop a ‘whole hospital’ approach to embed physical activity into secondary care pathways. Phase two of the Active Hospitals project builds on this pilot and aims to develop a simple and sustainable approach to embed the promotion of physical activity into routine care across all clinical specialisms.

Full information is available on the PHE Bravo e-Tendering Portal. If you haven’t already done so, you will need to register your organisation on the PHE Bravo e-Tendering Portal. This is free of charge and a one-off requirement. Once registered please navigate to Project 5306 or ITT 4100. There is a help desk facility provided by Bravo in case of any difficulty: 0800 069 8630 Option 1.

To support applicants to understand the scope and objectives of Active Hospitals and to gather the appropriate internal support to achieve impact on practice and patients PHE are running an information webinar on the 15th January 2020 (12:30 -13:00). If you would be interested in accessing this webinar please register here.

Please note, due to the nature of this procurement process all questions relating to the tender must be submitted via the PHE Bravo e-Tendering Portal and will not be answered directly.

Funding ideas

On the basis of the current evidence, your experience and the resources we have provided through the Active Hospital toolkit, why not put together a funding bid for local funding?

There are many other places to look for funding, here are a few ideas:

  • Are there opportunities in your area for submission of business case proposals to your Hospital Trust, Local Integrated care systems (ICSs), Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) or Local sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs)?
  • Charity organisations: your hospital may have a WRVS / Friends of your Hospital / Patient Panel – some of these are charities aiming to use money for the benefit of the hospital.  We were successful in Oxford in securing funding from the Oxford Hospitals Charity to help with equipment and resources to promote physical activity on Medical Wards!
  • Research: research and PhD funding has both the advantage of impacting on patient care, but also producing the evidence that your interventions have made a difference. Collecting and sharing consistent data across the NHS will maximise the outcome data and subsequent opportunities across the UK.
  • Local Innovation funds
