Different types of physical activity

“I thought that physical activity meant running, swimming or being at the gym, I now know it can be anything, mowing the lawn, gardening and walking to the shops all counts.”

see whole day as gym menopause

“I really struggled with weight gain when I hit the menopause and couldn’t afford to join the gym, it was a revelation when my doctor reminded me that you burn more calories being active over the day than you burn during a gym work out, now I see my whole day as my gym.”

more fun with a friend

“If I didn’t exercise with my friends, I think I wouldn’t have done half as much as I have done, going with a friend has been more fun, even when we are suffering through running in the rain!”

walking me time

“I started walking just an extra 10 minutes a day, then it was 20 minutes, then 40 minutes, I feel so much better and love my walking “me time” where I can listen to music or podcasts and really switch off from work. I sleep better and my anxiety is so much more ‘under control’”

menopause weights

“I thought hitting the menopause made me weak, more fragile and prone to injury, it was a relief to find out that I could exercise and pick up heavy weights and that this was going to help me in the long run”

end of youth

“I was very upset and low when my doctor told me I was menopausal, I thought that was the end of my youth, fertility and felt so unattractive. I realise now it can also be a time to reassess things and carve out more me time, it can be a ‘menostart’ rather than a menopause.”

HRT

“I didn’t realise that going on to HRT wasn’t the be all and fix all solution, I thought I would lose weight by just starting my patches, it was only after I started exercising that I noticed a difference in my body and weight and how I felt.”

how i feel about myself

“Instead of coming home and thinking, right sorting out tea, sorting out children’s homework, baths, this, that and the other and then me slouching in front of the TV, I’m doing something positive for myself, its not about what I weigh, it’s how I feel about myself”

joint pain menopause

“ During the start of the menopause, my joint pains worsened. I was afraid my joint pains would continue to worsen if I started increasing my physical activity. However, my joint pains improved, I reduced the amount of medications I had to take and had so much more energy. I wish I had started sooner!”

you might not lose anything

If you exercise … you might not lose anything. You might actually gain it because you might be gaining muscle … you think, Oh my god I haven’t lost anything, I’ve gained, so then you might give up after that … and you just think you know. I can’t do this, I can’t be bothered.
